Aaron & Sarah Hall's Biographies

Aaron & Sarah Hall have received awards in numerous string and piano competitions, soloed with and performed in many orchestras & ensembles, and have recorded 2 albums together (a third is on the way). They attended Academy of Music Northwest in the pre-college program for 5 years. In April 2011 their Academy of Music Honors Ensemble performed the Beethoven Triple Concerto with Philharmonia Northwest conducted by Julia Tai. Also in April, Aaron & Sarah performed the complete Brahms Double Concerto with the Sammamish Symphony Orchestra as a result of winning First Place in the Sammamish Symphony Concerto Competition. In addition to studying their string instruments, they both received private piano lessons for about 6 years.
Aaron, 19, began cello at age 6 with Karl-Friedrik Overman, and studied several months with Dr. John Friesen - WWU. Since age 13, he has been with Toby Saks (UW cello professor) - who studied with Leonard Rose. Aaron has performed in cello master classes with Amos Yang, Jefferey Solo, Amy Barston, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, and Johannes Moser. He finds pleasure in teaching 4 young cello students, recording music, and composing when time allows. In 2009, Aaron was a Seattle Young Artist Concerto winner, soloing with Philharmonia Northwest conducted by Roupen Shakarian, performing the Dvorak Cello Concerto. After earning first place in Washington State and Northwest Regional MTNA Senior String Competitions, Aaron proceeded to the national level, and received 2nd place in the 2010 MTNA National Competition in Albuquerque New Mexico. During 2009-10, he was principal cellist in Everett Youth Symphony and soloed performing the Haydn D Major Cello Concerto at their 45th Anniversary Celebration Concert at Benaroya Hall. In addition to music, he has a passion for propagating and growing plants & flowers to sell each summer. He also enjoys photography, hiking, and is an avid weather enthusiast.
Sarah, 17, began violin at age 4 with Anna-Lisa Overman and continued studying with Amy Gudorf. Since she was 11, Sarah has received her instruction from UW violin professor Ronald Patterson - who studied with Jascha Heifetz. Sarah soloed with Port Gardner Bay Chamber Orchestra when she was 10 years old, performing Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4. Following her 1st place in Washington State and Northwest Division MTNA Junior String Competitions, she was awarded 3rd place in the 2009 MTNA Nationals in Atlanta Georgia. In 2009-10, Sarah was Concert Mistress in Everett Youth Symphony and soloed, performing the Beethoven Violin Concerto. Last fall, she was selected to participate in a Midori Violin Master Class, where she performed the Glazunov Violin Concerto. Sarah is playing on a 1697 Testore violin, generously loaned by Ronald Patterson, her violin teacher. She presently teaches 2 violin students. In addition to violin, she enjoys singing hymns, cooking, hiking, and taking care of her milk cow, Lily (expecting a calf in June).
The Hall family lives east of Arlington where their lifestyle includes daily farm work, consisting of taking care of chickens, livestock, firewood to heat their farmhouse and a large summer market garden with canning and freezing food each fall. Aaron & Sarah became interested in playing an instrument after their older brother began violin lessons. Music has been a strong focus of their home education, family and church life. They have been blessed with excellent teachers, coaches, piano accompanist/collaborators, and family support.
